Ilustration The office building of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv

Russia's latest ballistic missile, the Oreshnik, could potentially be used to strike the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, according to a senior Russian parliament member, Aleksey Zhuravlyov. The Oreshnik missile was revealed to the world on November 21 when it was deployed in an attack on a weapons factory in Dnipro, Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the strike as a response to Ukrainian missile attacks deep inside Russian territory, using Western-supplied weapons like ATACMS and Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG.

"I am sure the Russian Ministry of Defense has compiled a list of viable targets in Ukraine," Zhuravlyov, the first deputy chairman of the parliamentary defense committee, wrote on his Telegram channel on Thursday (November 29, 2024).

"There is the presidential office on Bankovaya Street in Kyiv, where Zelensky hid in a bunker during the first days of the conflict. I even wonder if the Oreshnik could destroy this impregnable bunker," he added.

Zhuravlyov also suggested that the headquarters of the Ukrainian General Staff in Kyiv could be another suitable target.

He further noted, "Russia must target Western weapons logistics centers in Lviv, the Yavoriv Military Base, where Western mercenaries are trained, and bridges across the Dnieper used to transport equipment to the front lines."

Putin remarked this week that potential Oreshnik targets include military sites, defense factories, and "decision-making centers in Kyiv.

" During a press conference on his visit to Kazakhstan on Thursday, Putin described the missile as an extraordinarily powerful weapon, comparing its effect to that of a large meteorite. "Anything located at the epicenter will turn to dust," he stated.

U.S. President Joe Biden, in his final days in office, lifted restrictions on Ukraine’s use of ATACMS missiles earlier this month. Putin called this move a dangerous escalation that "changed the nature" of the conflict. He argued that advanced missiles like the ATACMS could not be fired without the involvement of Western personnel, effectively equating it to direct NATO involvement in the war.

Ilustration Israeli Fighter Jets

The Israeli military confirmed it had carried out airstrikes targeting what it described as "military infrastructure" belonging to Hezbollah near the Syria-Lebanon border. According to Israel, the infrastructure was used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons from Syria into Lebanon, which it claimed violated the terms of a recently agreed-upon ceasefire.

"The Air Force carried out strikes against military infrastructure located near the border crossing between Syria and Lebanon. This site was actively used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons from Syria into Lebanon," the Israeli military stated on Saturday (November 30, 2024), as reported by AFP.

The Israeli military further alleged that the smuggling activities occurred after the ceasefire came into effect. In a separate operation, Israeli forces conducted searches in southern Lebanon over the past 24 hours. During the operation, they claimed to have seized weapons hidden by Hezbollah in a mosque.

Background of the Ceasefire

The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect last Wednesday morning, aimed at halting the intense cross-border clashes between the two sides. As part of the agreement, Lebanese forces and UN peacekeepers were to be deployed in southern Lebanon. At the same time, Israeli troops were required to withdraw from the area within 60 days.

The agreement also stipulated that Hezbollah withdraw its forces north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Israeli border, and dismantle its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

Israel’s Stance

Israel has emphasized its right to "full military freedom of action" in Lebanon should Hezbollah violate the ceasefire agreement or attempt to rearm. The Israeli military has confirmed conducting several strikes in Lebanon since the ceasefire came into effect last Wednesday.

The rising tensions underscore the significant challenges in maintaining stability along the Israel-Lebanon border. Despite the ceasefire, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with the potential for renewed escalation at any moment.

Illustration of Lebanon's Situation Amid the Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire

Hezbollah leader, Naim Qassem, affirmed his commitment to establishing close coordination with the Lebanese Army to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire agreement with Israel, which began two days earlier following an escalation of conflict involving both sides in southern Lebanon.

"The coordination between the resistance (Hezbollah) and the Lebanese Army will be carried out at the highest level to implement the agreement’s commitment," said Qassem, as reported by AFP news agency on Saturday (30/11/2024).

He emphasized that there would be no "issues or disagreements" between Hezbollah and the Lebanese Army in carrying out the agreement.

Claim of Victory Over Israel

In its first official statement following the ceasefire that began on Wednesday morning (27/11), Hezbollah declared "victory" over Israel. The statement also affirmed Hezbollah fighters' readiness to confront any Israeli threats.

"Victory from the Almighty God is the ally of the righteous cause," read the Hezbollah statement, released on Thursday (28/11).

However, the statement did not directly address the specific terms of the ceasefire agreement with Israel.

Furthermore, Hezbollah stated that its fighters would remain in "full readiness" to face any ambitions or attacks from Israel in the future.

Ongoing Conflict and Recent Escalation

Israel began launching a series of intense airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon on September 23, 2024. These airstrikes were followed by the deployment of ground forces to southern Lebanon, escalating the conflict further.

Tensions had been rising over the past year with ongoing cross-border attacks between Israel and Hezbollah, coinciding with the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Hezbollah had previously stated that its attacks on Israel were acts of solidarity with Hamas, the primary party involved in the fighting in Gaza.

Challenges in Ceasefire Implementation

Although the ceasefire has been implemented, the situation on the ground remains fragile. Hezbollah has emphasized that it will not be complacent about potential Israeli threats. Coordination between Hezbollah and the Lebanese Army is crucial to maintaining stability in the region, although significant challenges remain amidst the complex political and military dynamics.

With both sides holding potential for significant conflict, the ceasefire is seen as an important but fragile step toward de-escalation in a region that has long been a focal point of geopolitical tensions.

Ragam Kegiatan Membangkitkan Semangat Bersama

Ilustration

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning, stating that Russia’s military could launch a devastating attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, using its advanced Oreshnik hypersonic missiles. Putin revealed that his military is already selecting potential targets in Ukraine for these next-generation weapons. During a meeting with Moscow’s regional allies in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Thursday, Putin described how these missiles could be aimed at key decision-making centers in Kyiv. He also indicated that military facilities, as well as defense and industrial companies, might be targeted, especially considering that the Kyiv government has repeatedly attempted to strike vital infrastructure inside Russia.

Oreshnik Missiles: A Game-Changer in Warfare

Putin emphasized that Russia has already deployed several Oreshnik hypersonic missiles and is ramping up production of these powerful weapons. These missiles, Putin stated, are designed to be nearly unstoppable, with speeds reaching Mach 10, and they generate temperatures of up to 4,000 degrees Celsius.

"Anything in the center of the strike will be reduced to elementary particles, turning to dust," Putin warned, describing the destructive power of the Oreshnik system.

The Russian president also claimed that these hypersonic missiles could penetrate deeply fortified underground targets, making them even more lethal than conventional weapons. He went on to compare the scale of potential damage to that of a nuclear strike, signaling the missile's unprecedented capability.

Retaliation for Western Weapons in Ukraine

Putin framed the threat of using Oreshnik missiles as a direct response to what he called the West’s involvement in the war. He referred to the recent missile launch from Russia as a response to NATO countries' decisions to allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons against Russian territory.

"This makes NATO members directly involved in the conflict," Putin stated.

On Wednesday night, Russian forces launched approximately 90 missile strikes and 100 drone attacks against military targets in Ukraine, targeting Ukrainian forces' use of Western weaponry.

Putin indicated that more strikes using Oreshnik missiles could be on the horizon, asserting that the missile system is unmatched worldwide and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. He made it clear that if Ukraine continues using Western long-range weapons to strike Russian territory, Russia would not hesitate to escalate its military response, including launching more combat tests of the Oreshnik system.

Oreshnik vs. Western Missiles

In his address at the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) meeting, Putin compared Russia’s Oreshnik missiles with similar systems such as the American ATACMS and the French/UK SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles, which Ukraine has used against Russian targets. However, Putin argued that Russia’s hypersonic missiles were superior in several aspects and that Moscow is able to produce far more of these advanced weapons than the entire NATO alliance combined.

This rhetoric from Putin reflects growing tensions between Russia and the West, particularly as Moscow continues to face increasing military support for Ukraine from NATO countries. By touting the capabilities of the Oreshnik missile system, Putin is sending a clear signal that Russia has formidable weapons at its disposal and is willing to use them in response to what it perceives as Western interference in the war.

The Growing Threat to Ukraine and the International Community

Putin’s comments highlight a worrying escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, underscoring the potential for further intensification of military action. With the threat of hypersonic missiles and the continuing deployment of advanced Russian weaponry, the situation in Ukraine remains volatile, and the involvement of NATO countries only complicates matters further. As Moscow makes clear its readiness to engage in more severe attacks, the international community is bracing for the next phase of this high-stakes conflict.

Ilustration

Global oil prices surged again on Thursday, fueled by escalating tensions in the Middle East between Israel and Hezbollah, alongside OPEC+'s decision to delay a critical policy meeting. These developments have heightened concerns in global energy markets, with fears of potential supply disruptions and uncertainty surrounding future oil production policies.

Middle East Tensions Push Oil Prices Higher

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensified as both sides accused each other of violating a recently established ceasefire. The clashes led to Israeli military tanks launching attacks in southern Lebanon, an area already devastated by 14 days of fierce fighting.

Although the ceasefire allowed residents of both countries to return to their homes, the underlying tensions remain a global concern, especially as the Middle East is a key region for global oil production. While the conflict has yet to directly impact oil supplies, the risks associated with the situation are closely monitored by market participants.

Oil Prices Climb in Response to Uncertainty

According to Reuters on Friday (November 29, 2024), Brent crude futures rose by 34 cents, or about 0.5%, to USD 73.17 per barrel. Meanwhile, U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures increased by 16 cents, or 0.2%, to USD 68.88 per barrel.

The price uptick reflects market reactions to the geopolitical uncertainties stemming from the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. Tensions in the Middle East often trigger volatility in global oil prices due to the region's significant contribution to the world’s oil supply.

OPEC+ Delays Key Policy Meeting

In addition to geopolitical factors, attention is also focused on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, collectively known as OPEC+. The group had initially scheduled a policy meeting for December 1, 2024, but it has now been postponed to the same day amid ongoing discussions about extending production cuts.

OPEC+ currently produces around half of the world’s oil and has maintained production cuts to support prices amidst weak global demand. Sources within OPEC+ suggest that the group is likely to extend the production cuts originally set to end in January.

According to Rory Johnston, an analyst at Commodity Context, it is highly unlikely that OPEC+ will announce any production increases during the upcoming meeting.

“Given the current market conditions, maintaining production cuts appears to be the most prudent course of action to stabilize prices,” Johnston stated.

Weak Global Demand Looms Over Energy Markets

Sluggish global demand remains a significant factor pressuring OPEC+ to reconsider plans for increasing production. With global energy consumption still below optimal levels, balancing supply and demand continues to pose a major challenge for the group. The decision to delay production increases aims to prevent further price declines in the oil market.

Conflict and Policy: Key Drivers of Oil Prices

The interplay between geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and OPEC+ policy decisions creates a complex dynamic in the global oil market. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, while not yet directly impacting supplies, raises concerns of broader escalation. At the same time, OPEC+’s cautious approach to maintaining production cuts reflects the fragility of the current market.

Moving forward, oil price movements will heavily depend on developments in the Middle East and the outcomes of the upcoming OPEC+ meeting. In this climate of uncertainty, stabilizing oil prices remains a persistent challenge for the global energy industry.
