Putin Threatens Kiev: Oreshnik Hypersonic Missiles Ready to Strike Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning, stating that Russia’s military could launch a devastating attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, using its advanced Oreshnik hypersonic missiles. Putin revealed that his military is already selecting potential targets in Ukraine for these next-generation weapons. During a meeting with Moscow’s regional allies in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Thursday, Putin described how these missiles could be aimed at key decision-making centers in Kyiv. He also indicated that military facilities, as well as defense and industrial companies, might be targeted, especially considering that the Kyiv government has repeatedly attempted to strike vital infrastructure inside Russia.

Oreshnik Missiles: A Game-Changer in Warfare

Putin emphasized that Russia has already deployed several Oreshnik hypersonic missiles and is ramping up production of these powerful weapons. These missiles, Putin stated, are designed to be nearly unstoppable, with speeds reaching Mach 10, and they generate temperatures of up to 4,000 degrees Celsius. 

"Anything in the center of the strike will be reduced to elementary particles, turning to dust," Putin warned, describing the destructive power of the Oreshnik system.

The Russian president also claimed that these hypersonic missiles could penetrate deeply fortified underground targets, making them even more lethal than conventional weapons. He went on to compare the scale of potential damage to that of a nuclear strike, signaling the missile's unprecedented capability.

Retaliation for Western Weapons in Ukraine

Putin framed the threat of using Oreshnik missiles as a direct response to what he called the West’s involvement in the war. He referred to the recent missile launch from Russia as a response to NATO countries' decisions to allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons against Russian territory.

"This makes NATO members directly involved in the conflict," Putin stated. 

On Wednesday night, Russian forces launched approximately 90 missile strikes and 100 drone attacks against military targets in Ukraine, targeting Ukrainian forces' use of Western weaponry.

Putin indicated that more strikes using Oreshnik missiles could be on the horizon, asserting that the missile system is unmatched worldwide and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. He made it clear that if Ukraine continues using Western long-range weapons to strike Russian territory, Russia would not hesitate to escalate its military response, including launching more combat tests of the Oreshnik system.

Oreshnik vs. Western Missiles

In his address at the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) meeting, Putin compared Russia’s Oreshnik missiles with similar systems such as the American ATACMS and the French/UK SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles, which Ukraine has used against Russian targets. However, Putin argued that Russia’s hypersonic missiles were superior in several aspects and that Moscow is able to produce far more of these advanced weapons than the entire NATO alliance combined.

This rhetoric from Putin reflects growing tensions between Russia and the West, particularly as Moscow continues to face increasing military support for Ukraine from NATO countries. By touting the capabilities of the Oreshnik missile system, Putin is sending a clear signal that Russia has formidable weapons at its disposal and is willing to use them in response to what it perceives as Western interference in the war.
