Ilustration The office building of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv

Russia's latest ballistic missile, the Oreshnik, could potentially be used to strike the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, according to a senior Russian parliament member, Aleksey Zhuravlyov. The Oreshnik missile was revealed to the world on November 21 when it was deployed in an attack on a weapons factory in Dnipro, Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the strike as a response to Ukrainian missile attacks deep inside Russian territory, using Western-supplied weapons like ATACMS and Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG.

"I am sure the Russian Ministry of Defense has compiled a list of viable targets in Ukraine," Zhuravlyov, the first deputy chairman of the parliamentary defense committee, wrote on his Telegram channel on Thursday (November 29, 2024).

"There is the presidential office on Bankovaya Street in Kyiv, where Zelensky hid in a bunker during the first days of the conflict. I even wonder if the Oreshnik could destroy this impregnable bunker," he added.

Zhuravlyov also suggested that the headquarters of the Ukrainian General Staff in Kyiv could be another suitable target.

He further noted, "Russia must target Western weapons logistics centers in Lviv, the Yavoriv Military Base, where Western mercenaries are trained, and bridges across the Dnieper used to transport equipment to the front lines."

Putin remarked this week that potential Oreshnik targets include military sites, defense factories, and "decision-making centers in Kyiv.

" During a press conference on his visit to Kazakhstan on Thursday, Putin described the missile as an extraordinarily powerful weapon, comparing its effect to that of a large meteorite. "Anything located at the epicenter will turn to dust," he stated.

U.S. President Joe Biden, in his final days in office, lifted restrictions on Ukraine’s use of ATACMS missiles earlier this month. Putin called this move a dangerous escalation that "changed the nature" of the conflict. He argued that advanced missiles like the ATACMS could not be fired without the involvement of Western personnel, effectively equating it to direct NATO involvement in the war.
